Schon lange sind sie vorbei, die Zeiten, als man in Deutschland seinen Abfall einfach in einen Mülleimer geworfen hat, welcher dann ganz lapidar einmal wöchentlich oder vierzehntägig geleert wurde. Wertstofftrennung – so dass neue Wort für Müllsortierung – und Recycling sind angesagt. Manch Urlauber aus fremden Ländern mag sich wohl fragen, ob die ganzen bunten Tonnen, welche den Straßenrand am Abholtag säumen, nur eine modische Erscheinung sind (farblich auf's Auto abgestimmter Mülleimer?), oder ob dem eine tiefere Bedeutung zukommt. In unserem bürokratisierten Staat ist natürlich letzteres der Fall.

In Germany the times already had been gone, in those you simply could throw away your trash in one single trash bin, which has been emptied once a week or on a bi-weekly basis. »Wertstofftrennung« (= sorting recyclable material) — the new word for sorting your trash — and Recycling are the order of the day. Some people from foreign countries on vacation in Germany might wonder what these different colored bins are about, lined up at the roadside on pick up day. Is this just a temporary fashion (matching the bin color to your car color?), or is there a deeper sense within? In our bureaucratized state the later one is true, yes indeed.

Was aber ein richtiger Föderalstaat ist, überlässt die Regelung der Entsorgung den Städten und Gemeinde. Und diese handhaben das naturgemäß alle mehr oder weniger unterschiedlich. Um sich bei der falschen Entsorgung der Wertstoffe nicht strafbar zu machen (die Müllpolizei verhängt hier hohe Strafen) oder auf seinem falsch sortierten Müll einfach sitzen zu bleiben, ist man also gut beraten, sich beim Umzug – und sei es nur in den nächsten Ort – über die dort praktizierte Müllwirtschaft zu informieren.
Die Einsammlung bzw. Wiederverwertung von Leichtverpackungen, wie Folien, Plastik, Styropor etc. ist fast überall im Bundesgebiet gleich. Sie werden entweder über die gelbe Tonne oder den weit verbreiteten gelben Sack abgeholt. Altpapier wird entweder auf den Recycling-Hof gebracht, oder an speziellen Abholtagen einfach gebündelt auf die Straße gestellt. Oder aber je nach Stadt/Gemeinde in einer grünen oder blauen Tonne abgeholt; mancherorts wird in der grünen Tonne auch Altglas eingesammelt. Biomüll (organische Abfälle) kann man entweder selbst kompostieren, oder aber über die braune Tonne entsorgen. Bei manchen Verwaltungsbezirken wandert er aber auch in die Restmülltonne. Schließlich: alles was nicht in eine der bunten Tonnen gewandert ist, wird als Restmüll über den grauen Mülleimer entsorgt.

But in a real federated state the government leaves the regulation of waste disposal up to the cities and local authorities. And those handle things naturally more or less different. Not to become guilting when dispose of your recyclable material (the trash police impose high fees on doing so) or just not getting rid of your unsorted trash because it is not picked up, you are well-advised to inform yourself about the trash business at your local authorities before you move houses; even if you are just moving to the next village.
The collection of »Leichtverpackungen« (= light package, like foils, plastic, polystyrene, etc.) is nearly the same nationwide: They are collected via the yellow bin or the more common yellow bag. Waste paper is either brought to special recycling spots or just will be placed (on special days) bundled up on the pavement and be picked up from there. And some cities pick up the waste paper in either a green or blue bin; in certain places glas is collected within the green bin. Biological waste (organic trash) can be composted by your own in your garden or is disposed in the brown bin. But in some districts there is no special treatment for it and it is handled like residual waste. And finally: everything not going into one of the colored bins is disposed as residual waste in the grey bin.

Und warum diese Seite? Beim Ausbau meine Playmobil® Welt habe ich mich gemüßigt gefühlt, die derzeit in zwei Farben erhältliche Mülleimerpalette (grün und blau) um die restlichen Farben zu erweitern.
Da für die Entsorgung von Altglas, Metall und sonstigen »Sondermüll« keine Haushaltstonnen vorgesehen sind, bin ich auf diese Wertstoffe nicht weiter eingegangen.

Und damit auch keine Missverständnisse über diesen Artikel aufkommen: ich befürworte wirklich den Recycling-Ansatz und bin der Meinung, dass wir unserer Umwelt einen verantwortungsvollen Umgang mit den Resourcen schuldig sind. Ich bedauere manchmal nur, dass das Leben zunehmends komplizierter wird

And why this page? While extending my Playmobil® world I felt compelled to built the trash cans in other colors than the currently provided green and blue ones.
Because there are no special household bins foreseen for used glass, metal or other »special waste«, I didn't go into detail of disposing these items.

And because there should be no misunderstanding about this article: I do support the recycling approach. I'm also absolutely convinced that we have the responsibility for our environment to handle the resources with care. I'm only complaining, sometimes, just a little bit, how complex live has become
